Beware the Ides of March

Something's up with Felix. We hope, hope, hope that it's teething, because it's frustrating having him wake up so often in obvious discomfort and not be able to help him. He had a fever on Saturday, and hasn't slept well since last week. Which means we haven't slept well, either. Ugh.

On a brighter note, it doesn't look like it'll be too long before Felix figures out how to crawl. He's starting to move his knees a bit more when on his tummy. We'll see how long it takes before he gets it.

Just wanted to add a few pictures...

Piiiiiiiink Eyyyyyyyyye

That's how Felix decided to celebrate turning eight months old.  Yes, Felix has conjunctivitis.  My little robust man is showing he's human after all, with this and the ear infection a few weeks ago.  I don't mind having a day off, so to speak, but I only have so many days, and hope he decides to stay healthy for a while.

Kitty?

We had a nice visit with Grandma and Grandpa A and Natalie yesterday when we all (minus Felix) went out for a hibachi dinner for Natalie's birthday.  The only thing that could have made it better was if Team USA had won the gold in hockey.  Alas.  Cassie came over to watch Felix when we went to the restaurant.  Already, there is a disturbing trend to Felix getting into trouble when Cassie's around.  Cassie took him into the bathroom to look at the baby in the mirror when he got interested in the sink and the faucet.  The next thing she knew, he grabbed both handles, turned the water on, and soaked his feet, which I immediately noticed on my return home.  Can't fool me!

This morning, we discovered that Felix may recognize his first word.  Not Mama, not Papa, not even Felix.  No, the word that got an immediate reaction was Kitty.  I was trying to take a picture of Felix smiling at Rugby across the room, and Felix became distracted by my camera.  I said, "Look at the kitty!" and he immediately whipped his head up to see where Rugby was.  This happened more than once.  Wow.  I have a hunch that it's going to be his first word, too.

Not So Eagerly Awaited Firsts

We knocked out three firsts yesterday: First temperature over 103°F, first trip to urgent care, and first ear infection.  That was the diagnosis after Felix was sent home from day care yesterday.  We knew something was up with him, because he had a pretty bad cold over the weekend, and for the first time ever, showed little interest in eating.

Nick's home spending the day with him, armed with bottles, ibuprofen, and Felix's amoxicillin prescription.  This is Nick's first day alone with Felix.  Wish them luck!

Just like a vacation!

Felix's daycare was closed Friday so all the teachers could get their CPR training, etc.  I took the day off, and invited Cassie to spend the day with us.  We took a field trip to Olbrich Gardens (Cassie and Felix's first time).  Wow - that was a nice change of pace.  Hot temperature, high humidity, lots of greenery in the Conservatory.  It felt like being in Mexico again.  It was also nice to remind Felix what green plants look like.  We next went to Monty's Blue Plate Diner for a fabulous lunch (lots of people smiling at Felix), and got huge cupcakes.  Later, Grandma and Grandpa K made a spur-of-the-moment drive down to Madison to attend the Badger hockey game.  Overall, it was a great day, except for the end... Felix refused to nurse or take a bottle, and cried for a while before succumbing to sleep.  That really threw us for a loop, since it was the first time he's ever done that.  We thought it might have been teething, but he definitely was sick with a cold today.  Poor boy.  Coughing, sneezing, eyes watering, snotting (which even seven-month-olds know to wipe away with their sleeves), drooling.  This boy is a mass of leaking bodily fluids.  We just hope it gets better quickly!

Seven Months!

Time keeps marching forward, and here we are seven months from the birth of Felix (well, yesterday, anyway). And to celebrate, new pictures!

Merrily We Roll Along

Things have been pretty uneventful at our house lately, but here's what we've been up to.

Some nights, Felix sleeps through the night. Other nights, nope (like last night when he was wide awake at 3 am and would only go to sleep if he was gripping my hand, something I didn't want to get in the habit of. Result? Crying for over a half hour.)

Felix has been showing a tendency toward stranger aversion, or people he doesn't see often. I think Cassie messes with him a bit, because she's a woman who sounds just like Mama but isn't Mama.

I'm trying to encourage him to figure out the whole crawling thing (yes, I know I will regret this when he learns how), but so far, he'd rather lay on his tummy than be up on his knees. Nick and I did purchase a number of baby-proofing items for him, so we're ready once he does start moving. We also upgraded him to a bigger car seat, since his ~17 lb weight was getting too heavy for the infant carrier. We bought a doorway jumper for him, and he seems to like that a fair bit. He looks like he's dancing a jig in it, which is pretty cute.

Felix has nommed his way through sweet potatoes, green beans, peas, carrots, bananas, rice and oatmeal, and has tried a few cheerios. I'm thinking about making him winter squash next before introducing more fruits.

Nick's businesses have been taking off. He's meeting lots of people, forming lots of relationships, and generally trying to get his name out there. We know it's going to pay off big time! Along with that, Nick and I have decided to learn Spanish. Nick'll have an easier time with it than me (German's not going to do me any good, but maybe the semester of French I took will help), but I'm excited to give my brain a challenge.

My evenings generally look like this: Pick up Felix on the way home from work after 5, change, make dinner, eat dinner, feed Felix, play with him, give him a massage, bathe him (every other night), feed him again before bed, put him to bed, make my lunch, get his bottles and food ready for the next day, get my pump stuff ready, then collapse on the couch at about 8 pm. At least there's been a lot on TV this year that's given us plenty to relax to. New shows this year we like are FlashForward, Glee (well, me anyway), Community, White Collar, and Archer. Those in addition to Psych which we love. And now we've got Olympic coverage to watch. Bring on the curling!!

Tomorrow Felix turns 7 months old, so I'll post some updated pictures soon!

First Half of 2026

It's been a whirlwind of a summer so far, so much so that I forgot to whip up this blog post until now.  2026 has been good to us so far...
