Iris Eats

Feeding Iris solids...

2/22 (just under 6 months): Started her off on 2 tbsp of oatmeal cereal mixed with breastmilk, formula or water. Gave her an extra tbsp if she was still hungry.

2/28 (6 months): Gave her homemade baby food (steamed and pureed peas) along with ~3 tbsp cereal at dinner time. She didn't care for the texture on their own. Mixed it with cereal the next two days.

3/6: Added a second feeding of cereal (breakfast), 2-3 tbsp.

3/10: Gave her a cube of carrots by itself. Tried to feed her a cube of peas afterward (still doesn't like the consistency of them). Mixed half of the peas with cereal.

3/11: She's now eaten the following three consecutive days and in this order: peas, sweet potatoes, green beans, and she's on her third meal of carrots tonight. All homemade (steamed/pureed/frozen in ice cube trays). If she likes a food on its own, she'll get a cube of food by itself. Otherwise, I mix it with 2 tbsp of oatmeal cereal. If she indicates she's still hungry, I give her an extra 1-1.5 tbsp of cereal mixed with a dash of formula mix and equal parts water.

3/18: Iris has eaten squash and apples now. Her daycare teacher Nancy suggested adding lunch because she was having difficulty making it to her 12:45 feeding. On 3/16, I gave her lunch and applesauce for the first time. She wasn't too thrilled with the taste of homemade applesauce. Right now, cereal seems to be her favorite. For dinners, I'm starting to mix veggies if they are both ones she's eaten already. Last night, peas and carrots. This new food (possibly the applesauce) has given Iris her first case of diaper rash. Better change those stinkies quickly!

3/22: Yesterday, Iris ate a lot (4-5 tbsp?) of cereal for breakfast and didn't need to be nursed until 11:30 (I usually feed her at 9:45). Today, she's following a similar delay-in-eating pattern. I hope she's getting enough liquids! This seems pretty sudden. Also, she is a pooping queen! Yesterday, she had 7 poopy diapers, one more during the night, and her little bottom is not happy (though she doesn't seem terribly put out by it). Added parsnips, bananas and turnips to her menu.

4/8 (7 months): Iris has added cauliflower, broccoli (likes only when mixed with cauliflower), avocado, blueberries (awful poops - but a cute, messy face), graham cracker bits and a taste of mango to her menu. I've started chunking up her daily bananas now that she is able to grind and mash them herself more. Tested it by feeding her thin slices of banana yesterday. I think we're going to move on to some black beans next.

4/24: Huh. Meant to update this more regularly... Anyway, Iris started eating a snack at daycare on 4/10, so now I send three containers of food with her each day. She eats cereal and some mashed bananas for breakfast, mashed bananas and two cubes of veggies for lunch, and mashed bananas and peaches for an afternoon snack. At home, she's getting two cubes of veggies, cereal, and a cube of fruit for dinner (typically). I'm still nursing her on the same schedule, so she's getting plenty to eat. She now eats peaches, black beans, spinach, and tofu. I made her spinach/tofu/curry powder cubes; they're a bit strong on the curry powder, so I've been mixing one cube with some oatmeal cereal to tone it down. Tonight, I'm going to blend up the chicken pot pie we made and see how that goes over. Also, she's eating puffs and starting to practice her pincer grip when she does. Hasn't been able to feed herself well yet, though. If one gets in her mouth, it's luck.

5/10 (8 months): We've added a few more things to her diet: lentils (likes), melon, and Os. I made some chickpea puree (basically hummus without tahini) and it was a bit strong on the lemon juice for her. I've got some pureed chicken pot pie for her, but it's still a little chunkier than she'd like. I plan on doing some summer squash, beets, and potatoes soon. Maybe even start doing chunks of soft foods instead of all purees. We'll see. She's also started drinking juice out of a sippy cup - the kind with the little straw. She got the hang of it quickly when I gave her one with a bit of water in it a few weeks ago.

6/2 (9 months): Iris has become very adept at feeding herself Os and puffs in the last week. We're moving her toward chunkier food, but hasn't gone so far as to start eating our food on a regular basis. Soon, maybe.

6/14: We've started feeding Iris a bit of our own dinner. She's had pasta e fagioli and a bit of an Indian curry. She still doesn't care much for chewing things on her own yet. She really likes cooked zucchini with a bit of thyme. She's also started trying the foods they serve at day care, so hopefully I'll stop sending meals with her soon.

7/15 (10 months): We've been feeding Iris table food for a while, mainly pasta and bean-type meals. She's not interested in meats, but really likes whole, fresh blueberries. (Oh, those blueberry poops).

3/18 (18 months): Iris is a champion at feeding herself with a spoon or fork. Her first-year molars have cut through enough so she can use them to start grinding her food. We've starting testing her on a bit of raw carrot and other harder foods. And she eats and eats and eats. Her Buddha belly is just where she stores her food. There's little she won't eat, and an hour after a meal she's asking for snacks.
